This is a large, 200-page collection of six Carl books: Carl Goes Shopping, Carl’s Afternoon in the Park, Carl’s Masquerade, Carl Goes to Daycare, Carl’s Birthday and Follow Carl.

If, as it is said, that a picture is worth a thousand words, it is so true in Alexandra Day’s beautiful, full-page watercolor depictions of the adventures of Carl, the dog and baby Madeline. Each of Day’s colorful illustrations projects a lively activity, and each is filled with delightful humor. The detailed and realistic illustrations can be looked at again and again, and something new is seen each time.

Carl is a rottweiler that has a keen sense of fun and a well-developed sense of ingenuity as a baby-sitter/nanny. That Carl can apparently read is a great boon. Carl and baby Madeline have formed a smooth partnership for pursuing their adventures after the adults are gone, all the while however, Carl is keeping the baby safe.

All ages will laugh at Carl and enjoy the adventures. Although the book is too large for small hands, it will fit nicely along side a child on an adult lap.
This deluxe edition would be a wonderful holiday gift for any child or dog-lover, especially one who is partial to rottweilers. You might want to get two – keep one for yourself.

Armchair Interviews says: Wonderful illustrations.
