Despite our differences, we are all more alike than we think. That is the message in the book by Ysaye M. Barnwell, We Are One.
This is a lovely, peaceful read for soothing children–perhaps a bedtime book. So I have to admit I was surprised to put the included CD on to find an upbeat rhythmic song (by the author’s musical group Sweet Honey in the Rock) and a reading more in a storyteller fashion. I suppose I’ve misinterpreted more than one book in my lifetime of reading.
The illustrations of this book are magnificent–and probably the reason I thought the text should be soothing. I feel like I’m enjoying a lovely slow spring day when I read through this book. The children and families depicted are just a picture of melting-pot Americana. Everyone seems so joyful and free. As a mother of a multi-cultural family, I am especially impressed with the multi-cultural nature of the illustrations.
I do like the tone of the text. She really gives us humans the benefit of the doubt–that we are peacemakers, truth seekers, lovers of life. That is what children need to believe about themselves, ourselves, so as to become what she has written.
I recommend this book if you are looking for a soothing bedtime book with a positive message. And though my son prefers my reading to the one provided on the high quality CD, I suppose your little one may prefer the reading with more character. You never know. After all, we are all different, but we are also basically the same.
Armchair Interviews says: Wonderful book in both works and illustrations.
