Trudy Ludwig’s fourth book for children, Trouble Talk, discusses an important and growing problem in our children’s schools. Ludwig calls the problem ”˜trouble talk’ and defines it as “gossiping about someone else’s troubles in order to establish connection and gain attention.” I believe it is a form of bullying.
Maya makes friends with Bailey, the new girl in school. Bailey loves to talk and does so incessantly. A good part of what she talks about is other people. She spreads rumors, embarrasses the children and generally hurts everyone’s feelings.
Trouble Talk is a great starting point for parents, caregivers and teachers/counselors to talk to kids about ”˜trouble talk’ and the dangers of participating, and the pain if you’re on the receiving end.
The watercolor artwork done by Mikela Prevost adds to the storytelling in a big way.
Armchair Interviews says: Trouble Talk is a must read for anyone with young children in their lives.
