Twenty-nine-year-old Robbie Brownlaw is a San Diego homicide detective with what he terms a "primitive lie detector." When people speak, he sees colors that come from the person's emotions and not from the words they speak. He obtained his unusual condition called Synesthesia after being thrown from a sixth-floor hotel room three years earlier.
When former police officer turned ethics investigator, Garrett Asplundh, is found dead in his car near the Cabrillo Bridge, Brownlaw and his partner McKenzie Cortez are hot on the trail to find the truth. On the surface it looks like suicide, but Brownlaw believes murder is the better bet.
It seems that Asplundh had uncovered a major scandal and had enemies that wanted him out of the picture, permanently. It's up to Brownlaw to uncover the truth while he attempts to save his faltering marriage.
Two-time winner of the Edgar award for best novel, T. Jefferson Parker has scored once again in his current novel, The Fallen. It is a skillfully plotted police procedural with fully developed and believable characters that you feel you know. It is a wonderful marriage of a fascinating police investigation and the state of Brownlaw's life and marriage.
