People are mysteriously disappearing and leaving no clues in the small town of Sophie Trace, Tennessee. Brill Jessup, the new and first woman police chief, has her hands full trying to keep people safe, coordinating with the FBI and nearby sheriff, and getting her family settled in since their move. But the home front isn’t peaceful and the more time Brill spends on the case, the more tension there is at home.
Many of the people in Sophie Trace are superstitious and believe the old legend that ancient Cherokee ghosts are taking their vengeance on the white families that took their land when the Cherokee fled to avoid the Trail of Tears. And the media is all over the story and the legend that is terrorizing the locals and causing a panic. Can Brill catch the real criminals and earn the trust of her new neighbors? And what can Brill do to save what is left of her family life?
I like Brill; she moved to Sophie Trace with her family already in turmoil, and this current case with all the missing people isn’t giving her time to deal with the family issues that need to be dealt with. But Brill is an excellent police officer and will find the culprits behind the kidnapping with the proper time and resources, which she doesn’t have. But Brill refuses to give up, to her this is more than just a job, she owes it to the families of the missing to find their loved ones.
Using that same determination could save her marriage and keep her family together–but Brill seems unwilling. Her husband has wronged her and hurt her and she has no intention of ever forgiving him. Now Kurt claims that God has forgiven him and is calling him to teach Sunday school but Brill wants no part of church or Sunday school.
Why can’t this all just go away? What kind of God allows things like this to happen?

Armchair Interviews agrees this is a very good inspirational suspense.
