As I struggled for over an hour to get my 21-month-old son down for his nap, I knew there had to be a better way that worked for both of us. Being eight months pregnant only motivated me further to find that solution – and fast! Elizabeth Pantley’s The No-Cry Nap Solution provided just the guidance I needed. As she mentions in her book, napping issues are not created overnight, nor are they solved in a day. After reading through the first three chapters, I committed to give the method a trial period of several weeks.
Part One focuses on the facts about sleep in children – the amount, the stages, the timing. Not only does this information provide a solid basis for why napping is important, it also is the foundation to Pantley’s methods. She then goes on to help the parent create a sleep log and nap plan that best fits the individual needs of their child. This step was crucial in identifying the exact problems my son and I were facing.
Part Two focuses on newborn sleep and how it differs from that of adults and even older infants’ and toddlers’ sleep. This section gives valuable tips, such as varying sleeping location, to start my soon-to-be-arriving newborn on a successful sleep plan.
Part Three offers a question and answer portion to address many of the common concerns for parents. Pantley provides gentle guidance and support for parents to help them transition their child into healthy and flexible naptime routines. For us, easy napping did not happen overnight, but each naptime got progressively easier. Previously, my son needed to be held in arms and nursed to sleep. By following Pantley’s advice, he is now able to nap easily in a wide variety of situations.
Pantley speaks to parents in a direct, gentle and flexible way. She maintains respect and sensitivity for the needs of both the parent and child. The No-Cry Sleep Solution provides guidance without strict dogma,
