The NIV Study Bible is the bestselling study Bible with over 7 million copies sold. It was extensively revised and updated in 2008. One interesting feature is the full-color chronology at the front of the Bible that not only places the various books of the Bible on the timeline when they were written, but also places the rise and fall of various kingdoms along with other historical events such as the death of Caesar Augustus.
The more than 20,000 study notes have been updated and expanded to reflect the latest thinking in conservative Bible scholarship involving over 40 editors and contributors. More than 800 notes have been added. 4300 Icons highlight notes of special interest relating to character studies (900), archaeology (425), and personal application (3,000). In addition there are comprehensive indexes for topics, maps, and study notes to make each of them more accessible. I especially liked having both a harmony of Jesus parables so that I could see how many of the four gospels each parable appeared in as well as a harmony of the gospels.
The center column reference format makes it easier to find related passages to the one you’re studying. I especially liked the comprehensive introductions and outlines for each book. For many of them you get background on the author, the date of writing, the language and text of the original, setting and perspective, theological them and message, literary form and structure, and a complete outline. Another great study help is having most of the maps embedded in the text that they relate to.
Highly recommended for those that want a study Bible that provides support for really understanding the Word of God.
