If you are invested in the education of a child, then you will want to pick up Maya Frost’s book, The New Global Student. And I would suggest running, not walking, to your local bookstore to pick it up! Most people, from neighbors to teachers to politicians, have ideas about what’s not working in education today. It’s gotten to the point that we don’t need anyone else to tell us how bad things are. What we really need is a vision for how education might be better. We don’t need a new twist on the same old, same old. We need a brand new way to think about what it means to educate our children for the global world in which they live.

Maya Frost isn’t presumptuous. She doesn’t say that she’s out to begin a revolution in American education, and yet her writing does just that. She puts our outdated, rat-race mentality on its head, and inspires students to work harder to get farther, and to have much more fun while pursuing an international education.

Frost lays out a roadmap for obtaining a truly global education. She shows her reader how to differentiate between global hype and the real international experiences that will prepare a student to be an effective player in our global markets. What’s unusual about Frost’s book is that it isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. She goes through many different scenarios for how a student might get that international experience. Families can take a sabbatical abroad, or they might even move overseas. Students can do a year exchange in high school, go abroad during a gap year, study abroad in college, or work abroad after college. There is no one way to obtain the stellar education about which Maya Frost raves.

Frost gives an expansive view about how a student can achieve a global education, and yet she also includes the practical, detailed information that you would need to make the global education dream into a reality. Honestly, this book contains all of the information you would need to go from having a ho-hum, average American education to walking down the aisle of a 747, about to embark on your own adventure of a lifetime. If you pick up this book, you will find websites, strategies, and options that will arm you with the information you need to go global.

I am giving this book my highest recommendation and hope that every parent and young person reads The New Global Student. This book has the power to revolutionize our vision of what’s possible in education.
