This third installment of the renegade series was my first C.L. Rossman read. Following Renegade the Hunter and Renegade the Warrior, Mission to Earth begins at the point where the Hunters are returning to earth to seal a pact. Prejudices run high on both sides of the fence. Humans believe that Hunters are planning to behead them and mount them on their walls. Hunters believe that Humans kill and eat each other.

As if this meeting isn’t already terrifying for both sides, we have to throw in the Human Coalition. This is a group of people who believe that any alien negotiations are evil and are willing to do anything to stop it from happening. When the Coalition plans a terrorist strike for the human/alien negotiations, will any peace be found?

Though not an avid sci-fi reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The Hunter race is precise and well-planned. Sadly, the picture painted of humans is accurate. The interaction between races is easily believed.

The Hunters are a proud, noble race. Murder is quickly treated with death. No one lies to any other. Men and women are equal. Instead of everyone working under a dominant society, they all work together and simply are.

Humans are painted as both warriors and monsters. We get to see the noble side of humanity in several of the characters, but we also sadly see the fear and oppression that ruins our beautiful world. It’s extremely interesting to view it through the eyes of someone from another planet, though.

My only problem with this book is “the sex scene.” We have this proud, noble Hunter, and a nosy, star-struck reporter. The Hunter, who is supposedly so full of morals that we can barely comprehend him, basically says, “Hey, I’m engaged to be bonded for life to this other girl back home, so let’s just have sex tonight and maybe I’ll call you later.” Is this really befitting actions for a Hunter?

Armchair Interviews says: Excellent third book in this series.
