Marathon Motor Works has been out of business for years and years, but when some old documents are discovered dating back to 1914, a number of people suddenly become very interested.

Greg McKenzie and his wife Jill run McKenzie Investigations in Nashville. When Colonel Warren Jarvis contacts McKenzie investigations, Greg and Jill are more than happy to lend a hand. Warren Jarvis makes an appointment and appears with his friend Kelli Kane. Kelli has worked undercover for the government for a number of years but now she is in Nashville to visit her grandfather, Arthur Liggett.

Arthur, now in a nursing home, was contacted by a Pierce Bradley who found some records complied by his grandfather, Sidney Liggett back when Sidney was employed by Marathon Motors. There was always a mystery surrounding his disappearance and later his death. It was rumored that nothing was on the up and up at Marathon–and Arthur felt that the papers might be the proof he needed to clear his grandfather’s name.

Pierce Bradley failed to show up for a scheduled meeting and Warren and Kelli hire Greg and Jill to find Pierce and recover the missing documents. They do locate Pierce but he isn’t talking.

A bizarre chain of events occurs before McKenzie Investigations can bring the case to a close. Jill and Greg evidently have a very close relationship and few problems in working together.

Having read three out of four Chester D. Campbell books, I feel that this one is the best yet.
