The author, Aileen G. Baron Ph.D., according to her bio, has quite an impressive background in archaeology and taught for 20 years in the Department of Anthropology at California State University, Fullerton. The reason I’m mentioning this, is that the book is full of detailed information on an extensive variety of antiquities, mythology, travel, and historical facts.
It is so full in fact, it weighs down the mystery part of the novel to a snail’s pace. The Gold of Thrace is primarily about the danger and consequences of the illegal trafficking of artifacts, both genuine and counterfeit.
If you are looking for a fast-paced mystery with spine-tingling adventure and life-like characters, you will most likely be disappointed with this read.
However, if you adore ancient history–and love detailed attention given to accurate descriptions of relics from several different centuries and cultures, in several exotic locations–then you should enjoy this author’s gift of description. The book is not offensive in dialogue, or characterization, which is always a plus for this reader.
Armchair Interviews says: Slow as a mystery, but wonderful for its rich and extensive descriptions.
