When Cassie became pregnant as a teenager, her church shunned her and her father disowned her, forcing her into the arms of the baby’s father. Now fifteen years later she still lives with the regrets of the life she may have had. Her life feels empty and pointless. After running away with another man, she ends up back at her birthplace with her mother. Will Cassie learn to let go of the past before it’s too late?

Peck is the chief of the fire department and heading into the wildest fire in South Carolina history. On top of that, his wife has been cheating on him and has run off with their fifteen-year-old daughter and another man, one who used to be a friend. Peck’s dad is in a nursing home and sliding downhill quickly. How can he overcome all of the pain and fear in his life without his wife and daughter by his side?

I can honestly say this is one of the best books I’ve read in the past year. It’s well-written, intense, and full of emotion. Each chapter is written so that it’s either from Peck’s or Cassie’s point of view, letting you see both sides of the picture at the same time. With their worlds falling around them, both of the main characters are doing everything in their power to hold on to each other while trying to let go at the same time. This is a heartfelt story that will reach anyone that reads it.

My only complaint with this book is that the title and cover don’t do it justice. If I were to see this sitting on a shelf in a bookstore, I would pass right by it without a second glance, not knowing the treasure that lies within. After having read the book, however, I can honestly say that I will suggest it to every reader I know. It is a strong story that sticks with you long after you’ve finished the last sentence.

Armchair Interviews says: Riggs is an author to watch for. He is an author who tells a strong story.
