Back in the day, crimes were just as gruesome, horrific and challenging to solve as they are in our current era of sophisticated crime scene investigation. The original story, first written in Swedish, was published in 1969. As such, the methods implemented by the local Stockholm police in solving the crime may seem primitive. That being said, as the crime is explored, you’ll discover some of the tried-and-true police tactics identified in this story are still very much a part of solving crimes today.

So where does this crime begin? Surprisingly the story begins with an introduction by Colin Dexter. Colin is the individual who translated the original copy written in Swedish into English. Once you read, browse, scan or skip the introduction, the Martin Beck (our main character) police mystery quickly begins to unfold.

Seemingly unrelated deaths are facing Martin Beck and the team of investigators, some more adept at investigation than others, or it would appear.

The mystery of how and why an apartment complex went up in flames is the consuming issue for the investigators. And, the fact that one of investigators, Gunvald Larsson, was on a surveillance detail at the scene of the fire when it began adds to the intrigue.

The story takes place in Stockholm. However, when the investigation begins to increase in scope, the various cities and locations where the investigation takes places are those that you can’t imagine would relate to the crime.
The story is cleverly written. The characters are described well beyond a cursory look, and you will discover a favorite or two, no doubt.

The chase, the characters, the crime, and the inside workings of solid investigative strategies keep you turning the pages. The ending is truly a surprise.

Armchair Interview says: This Crime Fiction/Martin Beck Police Mystery is a quick summer read, enjoy.
