An invitation to a picnic with the King! That is cause for excitement. A young boy, his papa, three wild aunts, and two dogs all take off across France for the event. When the day of the picnic arrives, everyone carefully prepares for the picnic. But oh, dear! Papa’s pants are more than a bit tight and they burst at the seams when he sits down.

After the shock of pants bursting, people begin to titter, guffaw and even laugh. But the King declares that everyone will strip to their underwear. And they did. And they had a marvelous time dancing in their underwear.

Told in rhyme, the story is delightful, lots of fun and whimsical. Catherine Stock’s colorful illustrations are fun-filled but may be a bit frenetic for some children. Three of my grandchildren loved the story but were not as taken with the illustrations.

Armchair Interviews says: Children will love this silly, fun story told in rhyme and will ask for it over and over.
