The Chosen of Azar is a young adult fantasy. Five young people are chosen to defend good in the Fifth Age. These five teenagers are brought to Haven’s Hold for training in arms and magic by the Barranda Guard.
Unfortunately this book struggles from the start to define itself against the cliches of its genre. Many of the characters are the kind of people that have populated numerous other stories. This in itself would not be such a problem if the characters acted and felt on their own behalf. For at least the first half of this story, the people are acted upon. Information is revealed clearly and easily, no one rebels against being torn from the families that raised them. Even the prophecy is crystal clear.
I read more than half the book waiting in vain for some true obstacle to stand in the way of the character’s progress and begin defining their character.
I cannot recommend this book.
