The Author is supposed to be the prequel to The Teacher. Unfortunately as with many prequels, too much background information is given in this book.

I read and reviewed The Teacher and was kept on the edge of my seat, but with The Author, I was left hanging. Too much information to absorb. The writing in this book seemed like a very inexperienced writer. Most of the murders took place off scene, but were shown in Malcolm’s plans or memories of the killings.

The one murder that stuck out in my head was of a little girl, which was actually spelled out for the reader. It was the one that stuck in my mind. I was upset that he had to kill a young girl. None of the other murders stuck with me. This story also jumped around a lot and I was confused as to who the main character really was.

I believe if author Banfelder had actually cut a lot of this story, it would have been stronger and would have been more memorable.
