In Stupid about Men, Deborah Dunn examines the ways in which women are portrayed in several popular fairy tales, including: Cinderella, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood. She then offers insights into how women who fit into the patterns exhibited by the characters can change their behaviors to assist them in finding and keeping a good man. Dunn cites ten rules women need to follow in order to “live happily ever after.” While women should already be aware of most of the rules, Dunn’s use of clear and concise examples will cause them to more closely consider reasons for past relationship failures.

I enjoyed the uplifting and positive message of this book. It provides hope that love and romance can be found, but the author also makes it clear that a woman must not settle for whatever man is available in an attempt to avoid loneliness. Dunn also strongly focuses on the fact that a woman should not enter a relationship with the expectation of changing the man. The only person she can change is herself. One concept I find especially interesting is that a woman needs to develop strong relationships with other women but that they should not discuss men within these relationships. This seems a little odd since friends often turn to each other for advice on their romantic relationships.

Although this book is categorized as religion, the author does not overly focus on God. Rather, she presents the material as a guide for romantic love with a small section at the end that discusses God’s divine love. Therefore, those who are not religious can gain much knowledge about relationships without being concerned about having other people’s beliefs thrust upon them.

This book is an excellent choice for a book group. The discussion questions will surely spark interesting conversations. Although the book is written for a female audience, men can also benefit from many of the topics that are discussed.

Armchair interviews says: This book focuses on women finding and maintaining good relationships.
