Spanish Lullaby is Linda Domonique Grosvenor's seventh romantic fiction offering. In addition to this, she is also currently expanding into non-fiction with the release of The Plural Thing: Spiritually Preparing For Your Soul Mate in April 2007. Some of Grosvenor's previous novels are Love Lingers and The Hamptons, which she hopes will be made into a movie in the near future.
In Spanish Lullaby, we meet Marsia, a mother and wife who has suffered the worst imaginable loss--her husband and daughter are both killed in a gas station shoot-out. Her life is thrown into turmoil, and she retreats to the solitude of her home where she shuts out the rest of the world. But she can't avoid the real world forever. The life insurance money is running out fast, and the bank is threatening to foreclose on her mortgage. With the help of her best friend, Mona, she finds a job at a local bar, and slowly begins to feel somewhat alive again.
When she meets Max, the dark, attractive stranger from the fruit market, again in the bar, and their relationship begins to blossom, she feels like she is getting a second chance at life. Although Max tells her that he must return home to his native Puerto Rico at the end of the season, she finds herself falling in love with him, and thinks that he is falling in love with her.
Things seem to be looking up for Marsia, with her wages and tips from the bar job making a sizeable dent in her debts, and her relationship with Max growing stronger, but things are never as simple as they seem.
Firstly, there is Sidney, Marsia's mother-in-law who never liked Marsia from the beginning, and blames her for the death of her son. Sidney is rich and powerful, and when she wants something, she always gets it, and what she wants now is revenge on Marsia for taking her son from her.
Then there is the mysterious Esmerelda, who has a history with Max, and seems intent on taking him from Marsia.
Will Marsia and Max's love be strong enough to thwart the forces that would strive to keep them apart?
Armchair Interview says: This book is a real page-turner that will keep you guessing 'til the very last page. Definitely a four-star read!
