When Francesca Pena is found murdered, everyone who knows her is shocked. Pena is a student at NYU who has overcome a rough childhood. She is now an admired student-athlete as well as a mentor with the Big Sisters program.

Detectives Darlene O’Hara and Serge Krekorian are initially in charge of investigating who would want to hurt Pena and for what possible reasons. When they are replaced by homicide detectives, O’Hara can not let go because Pena’s family’s circumstances remind her of the difficulties she faced when she was younger. As the case progresses and details about Pena’s private life surface, O’Hara puts her career on the line to find the truth.

I love the main character Darlene O’Hara. She is spunky, determined, and independent. Her character traits are explained by her past as a high school dropout, teenage mother, and other youthful indiscretions. I like how she was able to do something good with her life despite her troubled past. Although she often walks a thin line with her superiors, her dedication to her job has earned their respect. I also enjoy watching her undergo personal growth to discover what the most important thing in her life is.

Peter de Jonge does an excellent job of pacing the action. He masterfully divulges the information slowly, allowing the reader to try to put the pieces together. The plot is intriguing from the beginning, but the last few chapters in which the story plays out are incredible. I am absolutely shocked at the direction the plot takes. I am impressed with the author’s creativity and ability to keep the reader interested in what will happen next.

Shadows Still Remain will appeal to anyone who wants to read a good book and likes surprises. I look forward to seeing more stories featuring Detective O’Hara. When she is involved, there truly will never be a dull moment.
