Running from the Devil is a the debut novel from Jamie Freveletti. It is a well-written professional book that will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish.

Emma Caldridge is a biochemist for a cosmetics company whose plane crashes while flying into Columbia. She is thrown clear of the wreckage and she not only survives the wreck, but avoids being taken hostage by the guerillas who round up the rest of the passengers and take them into the jungle. Emma has her own resources that include knowledge of the jungle plant life and the fitness of an ultra-marathon runner. While she is trying to stay with the hostages and avoid capture, Edward Banner is trying to co-ordinate a rescue operation. His efforts are made more complicated by people who are willing to use the situation to make their own political points.

Everything from the hot and brutal jungles of Columbia to the political maneuvering of the people surrounding Banner rings true. We share the hunger, pain and frustration of the protagonists. Everyone in this book has secrets, and it is the way that those secrets are revealed and haunt the people that lifts this novel from a good story to a great one.

The characters that populate the book are well rounded and believable. There are no super-heroes here. The protagonists bleed and deal with fear, and hope, in a way that makes us cheer for their success. The story line is real enough to add an edge to the novel without descending into social commentary that stops the action. There may be a message, but it will sink in after you put the book down and heave a sigh of relief and satisfaction.

Running from the Devil is an excellent novel and a comfortable length to read in one sitting. That is a good thing, because once you pick this book up, you won’t want to put it down.
