The Earth and I by Frank Asch is a great children’s story that your beginning reader will enjoy reading or you will love reading to your younger children. It is entertaining and enjoyable for a wide range of young readers and their parents.

The first thing I noticed about this children’s book is the eye-catching water colors. It immediately drew me and my children into the story. The color scheme is a little off beat. For example, some of the trees are pink and yellow and there are rainbow-colored turtles. This off-beat style makes each page a new visual adventure.

The story is just as much fun. The underlying message is care for our planet. The story uses the main character to walk you through several ways a child can interact with mother earth–from sunny walks outside, to dances with fall leaves, to the beauty of a rainstorm, the earth is presented as a friend. From this beauty, the author shows what can happen if we don’t take care of the earth, but that everyone can help ensure that the earth stays clean and healthy.

This book put forth a great message without being overbearing. Beautiful pictures, a good lesson, and an easy read for new readers, this book is everything a children’s book should be.
