L. Diane Wolfe has written a terrific leadership book in Overcoming Obstacles with Spunk: The Keys to Leadership and Goal-Setting. This self-published paperback has an enjoyable, friendly writing style. Some might criticize its syntactical error as being too close to spoken English. Understanding the author adapted seminar presentations to book form clarifies its style.

Wolfe’s premise is pretty easily followed: she asserts that true leadership needs to be done with spunk. For Wolfe, this spunky approach to attaining one’s goals could be stated as leading with charisma. Instead of trying to teach the reader new ideas about leadership, the author zealously mandates the charismatic is a key to leadership.

The author’s approach is interesting and conveys a strong central theme: if you are stuck in a rut embrace your passions enthusiastically. Obstacles are those things that keep us from our goals…hard charging past them will help you overcome them. Apparently this approach has earned this author the moniker “spunk on a stick.”

The book is probably best read one chapter at a time to give the information time to settle. Wolfe gives five keys to guide the reader through their leadership development:

– Developing a positive attitude

– Learning people skills

– Raising self-esteem

– Overcoming fears

– Setting goals

Reading through the book, I would not say that there is a lot of new information. Rather, it is a good way to review leadership principles. The book is commended for those who need a devotional style approach to leadership.

Who needs this book? Anyone who desires to strengthen their foundational knowledge of leadership.

Armchair Interviews says: An easy-to-read overview of leadership.
