Some authors write about social phenomena after they happen, as a way of documenting history. Other authors possess the insight to recognize a trend as it is occurring and then write about it so that the rest of us can make the most of the opportunity.
Marci Alboher is such an author. She has read the signs of the times and has chosen to let us in on the latest phenomenon. Alboher's new book, One Person/Multiple Careers, describes the "slash" effect. A slash lifestyle is when one person chooses to engage in more than one occupation. "Slashers" could be lawyer/chefs, police officer/personal trainers, or mom/eBay entrepreneurs.
Part I of One Person/Multiple Careers gives examples of individuals who live out a slash existence. While the examples are perhaps too plentiful, you can't help but feel your horizons expand as you read about so many individuals who have found satisfaction in multiple pursuits. Alboher writes that people become slashers in order to make more money, to utilize multiple gifts, or to develop new skills. Yet, overwhelmingly, people become slashers in order to pursue their passions. For everyone out there who has had a dream job deferred because it didn't seem possible, this book is for you!
After reading Part I, you may be inspired to add that slash career that you've always longed to have. But how does one make that dream a reality?
In Part II Alboher explains the practical details of succeeding in the slash lifestyle. She discusses how one negotiates flexible hours with employers, how to answer the question, "what do you do?", how to combat negativity, and how to make the most of the synergy between various occupations.
The slash lifestyle is the way of the future. The rapidly globalizing job market will force many workers to modify their careers. Some will feel victimized, but those with slash careers will find themselves prepared for a changing job market. I highly recommend this book to those who have always had multiple interests as well as to those who want to stay relevant in today's global economy.
