Review by Steven King, MBA

In the educational world, it seems everyone has an opinion about President Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation. The title No Teacher Left Behind drew in this educator. Kudos should be given to author Bryan Fiese since his book illustrates an excellent marketing strategy to lure teachers. The book does not deliver on its promise, however.

It is apparent that the book was written with good intentions. In the beginning, a competent review of “Generation Next,” the moniker attached to current K-12 students, is provided. The author should have developed that idea and wrote a book about the current generation instead of insinuating he could educate teachers on student engagement or motivation.

Fiese labels himself a power presenter, boasting speaking engagements to well over a million people. Reading the rest of the book leaves the reader feeling as if he’s looking at a series of disconnected quotes and convenient acronyms from various presentations. The material is based upon common sense that any educator would have learned in general studies.

There is no discernible logic to the presentation of material. Fiese jumps around and makes empty statements with no substance to help teachers actually engage students in the modern classroom. For example, a whole chapter is dedicated to “power presenting,” but could have been lifted straight out of a Speech 101 class. It is redressed in the garb of “do this, and you’ll reach the modern student.”
Let the reader beware – reading this book will not teach you how to engage students or motivate them. This book will only arm you with a few good quotes with which you can adorn the walls of your classroom.

In addition to content issues, this book was fraught with grammatical and spelling errors–things a professional editor would have fixed.

Armchair Interviews says: Heed this reviewer’s strong statements.
