Melanie Vargas is a federal prosecutor. A divorced (her ex is not much to talk about) mother of a two-year-old daughter, Melanie is estranged from her FBI boyfriend, Dan O’Reilly.
Melanie is preparing for the trial of a famous rapper when the defense attorney Lester Poe’s car is blown up with him inside. Even though the attorneys were adversaries, they had a personal history and Poe’s death deeply affects Melanie. She’s determined to bring his assassin to justice.
The FBI becomes involved in the case and as Melanie probes Poe’s life, she learns she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did. There were secrets that meant many people might be willing to see him dead. But she is an important witness and that means she is a target for the assassin. She’s going to have to move fast and be good at her job to keep herself and her loved ones alive.
Martinez is becoming a top legal thriller author. Her books are fast-paced page turners filled with excitement. I love her plots; her characters seem real and her endings satisfying. I did miss the sexual tension between her and Dan O’Reilly, however and want that back.
Armchair Interviews says: An author to watch–and enjoy.
