Set in the early '70s, Night Work embraces the bumps in the road of life, with a large dose of suspense and mystery. The main character is a likeable middle-aged widower who finds himself in new career circumstances after being "let go" by his long-time employer.
Moving from a cushy white-collar management position, Curt Mellam is humbled when he has to drive a taxi to make ends meet--and until he can get his new consulting business off the ground. Suspense begins when Curt discovers someone is out to get him and he has a close call with another cab. The authorities are suspect and Curt doesn't know whom he can trust. The reader is left to sort through a number of shady characters and series of dangerous events--even murder.
Over the course of his "night work," Curt begins to empathize with people from the other side of the tracks and eventually befriends some of his co-workers. Night Work is an insightful look into circumstances and relationships and its effect on the human spirit.
