When Simon Blackthorne first sees Kess Goodall inside the state capital of Mallaruza, he wonders what she’s so upset about. He’s come here to visit Abioyne Bongoni, an old college friend who’s currently president of this African country. Not that Kess is anything like Simon’s ideal woman–who will be tall, sleek and with dark hair. No, this fiery redhead is far from it.

Simon, incidentally, is a wizard who has come at his friend’s request to find out who has been raiding villages and killing people along the country’s borders. Another powerful wizard may be involved. Add to that a mysterious plague sweeping the hinterlands, along with the problem Simon seems to be having with his powers (they fizzle out at unexpected times), and you have the basis for this whirlwind novel, which charges full speed ahead, fueled by the bickering and between Kess and Simon. Simon may not ever consider a redhead as his ideal woman, but something inside him is supercharged at the sight of her.

This is the author’s first book in a new series. She previously wrote the Edge Series: Edge of Danger, Edge of Fear, and Edge of Darkness, along with other thrillers like White Heat, Hot Ice, In Too Deep, and plans to write at least two more in this new “Night” series.

Except for an unduly long and complicated first sentence that had me worried, Adair quickly gets down to business–and the rest of the novel just flies by, supported by the red-hot romance, the exotic location, touch of fantasy, and the charge-ahead plot, which should make it a real treat for romance and suspense readers alike.

Armchair Interviews says: Terrific suspense/romance by New York Times Best Selling author that willl enthrall you until the end.
