David Rosenfelt writes wonderful mysteries that make you laugh out loud! And if you’re a dog lover, as I am, you’ll like his novels even more.

Andy Carpenter is a wealthy attorney who rarely practices law. He’s got enough money so he only tackles the cases that are compelling to him. Those compelling cases usually involve a member of the canine community as a client. It’s just as it should be as Carpenter loves dogs, especially his own golden retriever, Tara.

Carpenter is handed a new case involving a Bernese mountain dog. It’s the offspring of a champion and there is a custody fight over him since his owner died. The owner’s wife, Diana Timmerman is in possession of the dog, but her stepson, Steven Timmerman is disputing ownership. While the custody is being decided, the dog, Waggy, will reside with Carpenter.

While Carpenter is at the Timmerman home, there is a deadly explosion and one of the people involved in the custody dispute dies and the other is accused of murder. It is up to Carpenter to defend the accused and determine where Waggy will live when another, unlikely person arrives on the scene to demand the valuable dog.

In New Tricks we see people, including Carpenter’s girlfriend, Laurie, from previous books, and that’s always fun. New Tricks is a fast-paced, fun romp through the world of a wealthy and reluctant lawyer whose passion is dogs. It’s simply a must read.

Armchair Interviews says: Read New Tricks and then pick up the other David Rosenfelt books featuring Andy Carpenter.
