Dr. Theda Coles works as a high school social worker in Crystal Lake, outside of Washington, DC. Her old flame, professional photographer Hunter Davis moves to town after his divorce, with his teenage son Curt. Coles has been through some trauma in her life. Davis left her when they were in their early 20s and, unbeknownst to him, Coles was pregnant with his son. She raised Kelly and married. But her luck was bad. Her son and husband died in a car crash. She hadn’t spoken to Davis in years and he was unaware of her pain-ridden angst.

Forgetting the past is hard for Coles even though her heart pounds heavily in passion for Davis. Curt Davis is also really friendly until his mother, Helena, shows up unannounced in Crystal Lake. She’s been in the Texas, Arkansas area and manipulates her way into her son and ex-husband’s lives, but she’s the one who left them to marry another man that she had been having an affair with, and now wants forgiveness. Helena feels that her entire marriage was over-shadowed by Davis’ love for Coles. She attempts, with an angry neighbor and member of the School Board, to discredit Coles’ reputation so she can’t take Principal Andre’s position when he goes on sabbatical.

Strength and perseverance emanate from Coles and she makes it through each and every blow dealt by Helena. Eventually everything works out for the best, but it takes a tragedy involving Curt for everyone to come to their senses.
