Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea, by Janet Halfmann, is written for children ages 4-8 and is part of the Smithsonian Oceanic Collection. Each book is checked for accuracy by curators at the Smithsonian and includes fun facts, points of interest and a glossary. The book’s companions are an audio and plush toy (purchased separately).

Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea is about an Artic whale that has a nine-foot-long tooth protruding from his jaw. The tooth is primarily found in the males and the purpose of the tooth is unknown.

The story focuses on one whale that has returned to his summer home with hundreds of other whales. The author gives the reader a history of the whales from birth–what and how they drink/eat, through adulthood and the dangers that lurk in the water, waiting to prey on the whales. It’s basically a miniscule look at the life of Narwhal.

Children will enjoy the story and illustrations, which are colorful and informative. After reading the book I read the fun facts and that added greatly to my knowledge. I was able to offer further information and answer questions my son had after reading the story.

Armchair Interviews says: A wonderful read; entertaining and informative. Perfect for the family or school library.
