Melanie Wells outdid herself in My Soul to Keep, the third installment in her spiritual thriller trilogy. The first two books, When the Day of Evil Comes and The Soul Hunter, were page turners, but this one exceeded the other two in suspense. The plot and subplots kept me wondering what was going to happen next.

Dr. Dylan Foster teaches psychology at Southern Methodist University and has just gotten through graduation. Foster has a lot on her mind with her tenure review coming up. Then she discovers there are problems with a coworker harassing a student, and the coworker suggesting Foster’s also involved in the harassment.

Dr. Foster’s friend Liz Zocci and daughter, Christine, are celebrating Christine’s birthday with Foster’s friend Maria and her son, Nicholas.

When the birthday celebration moves to the community park, the birthday girl, Christine, saw the “mean man” take Nicholas and she yells for help. The adults run after a van, but later the police discover it was the wrong vehicle.
Even though he’s missing, Christine feels a connection to Nicholas. She also has a guardian angel, Earl, to help her see and feel things others dIn on’t.

After Nicholas’ disappearance, Foster dreams about Peter Terry, the demon soul searcher that first appeared in Book 1of the trilogy. Terry has invaded Foster’s life many times. Seeing him in her dream makes Foster wonder if he’s back. She hardly has time to think about it when Christine stops breathing and ends up in the hospital diagnosed with asthma. Liz is sure her daughter doesn’t have asthma, yet the attacks continue. It doesn’t take long to realize there’s a spiritual battle going on and Christine’s in the hospital battling for her life.

I didn’t intend to stay up all night reading this book, but I’m glad I did. I’m sure my nails will grow back and I know I can catch up on sleep, but it will be quite awhile before I read a book this good again.

Armchair Interview says: Don’t plan on sleeping until you finish this exciting and suspenseful read.
