Review by C. L. Rossman

Hap Collins and Leonard Pine have been friends for years and their adventures have gained a cult following among readers. Following Lansdale’s earlier books about them such as: Savage Season, Bad Chili and Captains Outrageous.

In this book, first published in 1994 and re-issued under a major house in 2009, Leonard finds out that his Uncle Chester, who always despised him for being gay, has died and inexplicably left him his house and $100,000. But once Leonard moves in and gets Hap to help him fix the place up, they find stacks of child porn magazines, and worse yet–a child-size skeleton buried under the floor.

Was Uncle Chester living a secret life as a serial rapist and killer–or is he trying to tell the guys there’s something else going on? Once Hap and Leonard get on the case, the clues pile up in many different directions and they have to find the murderer before the police accuse Leonard’s deceased uncle of the crimes.

This is a fast-paced and darkly humorous novel. The author, who has won the American Mystery Award, the Edgar Award and seven Bram Stoker awards, among many others, writes with the wry and certain knowledge that no matter how far up you get, life is always waiting out there to smack you down.

Take Hap, who is pretty hapless when it comes to wooing and keeping women, or Leonard, who is so discouraged with the gay scene, he has decided to be celibate, and you’ll see what I mean.

These two have run under the radar for a long time; now readers in general will have a chance to get to know them and take part in their thrilling adventures.

Armchair Interviews says: Read our review for Savage Season and enjoy both books.
