Kidnapped as a young girl, Yelena is traveling south to a homeland she doesn't recall, to meet a family she can't remember. Nervous about the upcoming reunion, Yelena simply wants to continue on to the Citadel to begin her study of magic. She isn't the only one uncertain about the family reunion. Although her parents are overjoyed to see her, others are not. When her brother escorts her through the jungle toward the Citadel, Yelena is kidnapped. From there the tension mounts steadily as Yelena is sought after by a killer with ancient arts, who is preying on young magicians.

In this new place there are few who appreciate a foreigner, especially one who displays the obvious traits of an Ixian. Yelena does make new friends, but when the emperor travels south, Yelena is overjoyed to meet up again with old friends who understand her background and her different ways. The danger to the whole kingdom continues to escalate as the killer preys on more girls, and his evil intent is revealed.

Magic Study, the sequel to Poison Study, is full of adventure and excitement. The twists and turns of the plot keep the reader intrigued. Yelena continues to grow as a character. The dangers she encounters, and the passion she feels pulls the reader into her world.

From the very beginning I was drawn into Maria Snyder's fantasy world. Her imagery and imagination continue to entertain in Magic Study. New people and places are a delight to delve into and study. This is a sequel that doesn't disappoint.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommend Magic Study.
