I should start with a disclaimer: I have worked in the moving and storage industry for more than three decades so K. David’s memoir Look What I Found Underneath the Bed… was of particular interest to me. David writes vividly about his career in the moving industry, which he intended to be a way to earn money for a time. It has turned into a career, one which supports his writing–both the prose and the poetry that appears in this volume.
He brings his fellow workers, customers, and the surroundings to life with dramatic flair. From one episode to the next the reader is drawn to know how the day’s job will turn out, what lessons will be learned, and what wisdoms David will share with his co-workers. What elevates this above a series of stories about moving household goods –which ultimately amounts to moving some variety of towels, dishes, furniture, and all the other things we accumulate and then relocate as we move from residence to residence—is David’s determination to advance his own personal skills as a leader and an observer of the human condition.
The stories range far from just the day-to-day moving business. They illustrate David’s life, episodes filled with some level of adventure and a great deal of determination to advance through life in a purposeful way. He is not above laughing a bit at himself, showing a wry humility that makes some of the episodes he describes all the more interesting. His goal is to become educated in every way—with a college education financed by moving other people’s belongings, and with a daily education of human foibles, humor, and what you can learn from looking under people’s beds.
A creative writer with a big vision of himself and the life he wants to make, David’s memoir stands out as resolutely positive.
Armchair Interview says: If you’re looking for a memoir filled with surprises and no whining allowed, try Look What I Found Underneath the Bed….
