Lighthouses of the Golden State by Kent Weymouth took five years to complete. It’s so impressive that the United States Coast Guard Foundation requested its inclusion in their book awards. The outcome will be known in April 2009.
I love lighthouses. They stand erect, not only providing guidance and safety for those traversing the seas and oceans, but they represent strength, beauty, romance and adventure. And in the modern world they represent the past and present, each comfortable with the other.
Over the years California has had 43 working lighthouses (light stations). Thirty of the original number is still working stations/houses. Some of the original 43 are replicas, but that fact doesn’t diminish the rich history of the structures so valued by those needing their guidance.
Weymouth’s book provides an exhaustive look at the history of the California lighthouses. It includes a rich, exciting narrative, diagrams and stunning photographs that add greatly to the experience of learning about and enjoying the lighthouses.
