Annika is on a quest, and it isn’t just a matter of finding the high-demand toy at the day-after-Thanksgiving sales. She simply must make her little brother believe that wishes come true and then get him to wish his brain surgery will be a success. But when Jeremy throws her for a loop and wishes far beyond her expectations, the quest becomes nearly impossible. What won’t Annika do to keep her brother alive?
I could so really relate to Annika’s need to DO SOMETHING when everything is so far out of her hands. Sometimes, even when it makes no sense, a girl just might need to borrow the van, drive across state lines, sneak onto a Hollywood set, and try to convince the actor of the character her very sick little brother idolizes to come home with her. Even when she should stay home and spend time with the same little brother.
This story is witty, engaging, heartfelt and thoughtful. It’s another one of those novels that make you squirm at the crazy decisions and have to check your reality at the door, but you still can’t help but wish for Annika to succeed—without getting grounded for life.
I am particularly pleased at the clean nature of this young adult book. In a time when so many are about giving into to selfish desires, Annika, though selfishly wanting her brother to survive and thrive, is also acting out of consideration for her brother. I love that the sibling relationship isn’t hostile as so many are and that though Annika deceives her parents, it is for a relatively worthy cause.
This is a book I won’t hesitate to let my daughter read and pass on to her friends.
