Head knowledge that “only God is perfect” rarely translates out for most of us women as we strive toward our own version of perfect–the perfectly kept home where the perfectly behaved children play perfectly together and keep their rooms in perfect order. We may even want to perform perfectly at the perfect job with perfect benefits. And let’s not forget living the perfect life as the perfect Christian, perfectly in tune with our perfect God (who is, incidentally, perfect).

Author and life coach Joan C. Webb contends that “life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.” In fact, we were created to live a balanced life that we enjoy. But in order to enjoy life, we have to grow content with “good enough” and just quit striving for the impossible.

In 163 three-minute (or less) daily readings, you are encouraged to let go of the temptation to make yourself and those around you perfect. She breaks the daily readings into eight different thematic sections (for example: Relationships and Families, Life-Work and Service) so that you can go with your pressing circumstances or just read through the book. I am especially fond of the longer writings between the theme changes where she sets the stage for the daily readings.

It takes a mental shift from busy, busy, busy, gotta get this done, to glean anything from the shorter readings. I am done reading before I register what she’s saying, as they are approximately three paragraphs long. I come to the end and think, “Aw, dang, I’m done. What did I just read?” I glean much more on the second read through. Of course, if you can slow yourself down and read thoughtfully the first time, you will probably get quite a lot out of the three paragraphs. The nice thing is, if you have to read it twice, you aren’t out much time. (smile)

Ah, imperfection. Even when reading. But I’m gonna learn to embrace it.
