Shakespearean scholar and theater director Kate Stanley hasn’t seen Rosalind Howard in over three years and they didn’t part amicably–so why is Roz asking for Kate’s help now? Roz, a well-known Shakespearean scholar and professor, says she has made a discovery that is extremely important and that Kate is the only one who can help her. She gives Kate a small box and asks Kate to meet her later that evening and she will explain. But someone sets the rebuilt Globe Theater on fire and Roz is found dead inside the damaged theater. Kate opens the box Roz left her to find the first clue of a Shakespearean treasure hunt that will lead her across England, Spain, and America with a murderer right on her heels.
This is one of the most enthralling, suspense-filled, literary treasure hunts I have ever read. I love treasure hunt stories but this time the treasure isn’t as obvious and Kate isn’t sure what she is hunting. Is it a lost play of Shakespeare or the answer to the question about who Shakespeare really is. What she does know is that someone will stop at nothing to keep her from finding the answers she is hunting.
Every time Kate finds a clue, someone is murdered and she must flee for her own life. Kate doesn’t know who she can trust. Are old friends also after the treasure for their own reasons? Are the people who appear to be helping her part of the plot to stop her? Kate can’t even go to the police for help because they think she has something to do with the murders.
You do not have to be a Shakespearean scholar to enjoy this story. Ms. Carrell does a marvelous job filling in all the necessary information for the reader to keep up with Kate on her mysterious quest. The story is written in the plain, simple, straightforward manner of a gifted story teller and not as complicated literary work.
Armchair Interviews says: Anyone who loves a great treasure hunt or an excellent mystery will enjoy this tale!
