When I’ve shared this book’s message that many women walk down the marriage aisle KNOWING that he’s the wrong guy for her, several women have said: I was one of them!

This is a must-read for any woman contemplating getting engaged/married. The stories strongly bring the point home. If it feels wrong, if your gut is giving you the what for–listen, react, and do something, like maybe call off the wedding–or at least slow things down until you’re absolutely sure.

Anne Milford co-authored this book with Jennifer Gauvain, a licensed therapist. Anne knows what she is writing about because she called off her wedding. Although she felt somewhat embarrassed by her “poor judgment” in whom she was engaged to, being out of the bad relationship was worth any shame or sadness.

As she started telling others her story, she found many who wished they had had the courage to call off their own wedding. Anne began to see a pattern:

Why did I ignore “the signs?”

How did I feel–and did I pay attention to that little voice telling me …?

Why didn’t I have the courage to call it off?

The authors ask:

Who do women stay in relationships that they know are all wrong for them?

Why do smart, successful, worthy women consciously get engaged to the wrong guy?

Why do they settle for ho-hum, less-than-fulfilling relationship?

Why do they go through with the wedding even though they know it is a mistake?

Therapist Gauvin helped the Milford interpret the women’s stories and shared her wisdom from 15 years of doing couples’ therapy. Many reasons for going through with it exist, but the main ones were:

– The woman who determined she’d be married by age ( ) and then finds “a man” who will help her reach that goal.

– The woman who have always been “a good girl” and now is embarrassed by this BIG mistake—and gets married to save face.

— The woman who doesn’t’ realize her family will support her tough decision.

Every woman should read this to ponder her own answers to the many questions listed.

Armchair Interviews says: A must-read if you are single and contemplating marriage. It is a filled with such thought-provoking questions.
