Roy (David A.R. White) lives in one of the last pure Amish communities located outside of Dodge City, Kansas, and he is perched on the edge of adulthood, ready for his Rumm Shpringa (or rumschpringe for you readers of Amish novels). While many young Amish take this time to sow their wild oats in the dens of sin such as Branson, Missouri, Roy is going to use this time to bring the word of the Lord to the people of Los Angeles, City of Angels, where his uncle Jehosephat resides, participating in a covert group of actors known as “Holymen Undercover.”

Through a twisted set of circumstances, Roy lands in the good graces of Annie Logan (Andrea Logan White), famous TV producer. She casts Roy as Satan in her new hit TV series, “DarkWatch.” Through this venue, Roy hopes to proclaim to Maine and Florida the message of “our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

I’ll admit that this movie opened with such a bad scene of acting that I had little hope for it. (Turns out that first scene was meant to be incredibly bad acting—a very good thing.) I wasn’t sure where it was going or why—think a Will Ferrell movie without the big budget. All that said, though, it grew on me. Behind the low budget is a relatively clean, funny movie. There was nothing particularly offensive about it (you could watch it with kids in the room) except, maybe, to the Amish (who won’t be watching it anyway). Yeah, it’s goofy. Yeah, they make the Amish into a caricature. But it pokes more fun at Hollywood than at people of faith. And I expect people of both sets will laugh their butts off.

I love that Roy learns his lesson and walks away relatively unscathed. And his final analysis, “No matter where you live, the secret to happiness is to love God, love others, and just be you,” are words to live by.

Holyman Undercover is a zany, quirky, off-the-wall parody of faith in Hollywood.

Armchair Interviews says: Interesting DVD.
