Fogarty is the creator of the #1 ranked “Grammar Girl” podcast. She has been an independent writer and editor for years. So, she has certainly “walked this talk” and knows her stuff.

Most of us have someone in our life that likes to quibble about word usage. If you’re like me, I always wish I had a rulebook that clearly explains the ”˜why” of our sometimes-challenging language usage.

At the diner table my husband and I share writing issues we’ve seen during the day. Now this “go-to” gal’s book will enhance our discussions. She is clear, concise, uses humor—and makes us feel like we aren’t the only one who “didn’t know that.”

Fogarty explains it all so well, giving examples–her little “Quick & Dirty Tips” to help you understand and write better–and use words accurately.

I know I once learned all this stuff in school, but am really enjoying the tips and memory tricks.

Here are just a few of the common grammar usage examples she writes about that I appreciated the clarity of use:

— Bring vs. take
— Between vs. among
— Feel bad(ly)

Punctuation and capitalization have their own chapters. Her explanation of the semi-colon’s different use was invaluable, as I am forever challenged by clients that want to use tons of semi-colons. (I think they have their place, just not all over.) And she discusses those long (m) dashes that many writers overuse today. You can have only so much “emphasis.”

As an editor I find a common error is capitalizing words incorrectly. There are rules that she explains, for example, proper names; Mom, when used in place of her name, but not when it’s “my mom); and President (U.S.) and president of ABC company.

I discovered this book by accident but am now telling everyone it is one of those books to have on your shelf for reference. Why? Because now I know the “why” and have Fogarty’s book to back me up. You never know when you need a grammar expert as a friend!
