In Kann’s earlier books, Pinkalicious had such fun word play. Purplicious used colors and alliteration to touch on being yourself in a way young children could understand.

Goldilicious, while it still has really neat and involved artwork on each page, is missing the fun puns and smooth storyline of the two earlier books that were co-written with Victoria Kann’s sister Elizabeth.

Goldilicious is the name of Pinkalicious’ imaginary and very talented unicorn who is contemplating joining the Majestic Magenta Ballet, but the fact only one person can see her forces her to stay that ambition. After a few pages, Peter, Pink’s younger brother, joins in the game of pretend by offering a “cinnamon stick” for Pink’s tea; however, Pink declares herself insulted by the offer of a worm and warns Peter to beware “because Goldie will always protect me” she shouts as she rides away on Goldie.

The pretending in the book is good, but the storyline is just a bit choppy. Each page requires a small leap in thought that some small children may not be able to make and just makes the reading not as enjoyable.

Armchair Interviews says: A good book, not a great book.
