Four Wives. The title says everything, and yet barely scratches the surface. In this novel, we’re given four different women with one large similarity. They’re married. Love is a stay-at-home mom who’s running from her past. Janie is unhappily married and cheating on her husband. Marie is doing her best to juggle a law career and her family’s demands. Gayle comes from a wealthy family, but is battling problems at home of her own. All four women–connected by friendship, connected by being a wife.
So many times I wanted to put this book down, because it just hit too close to home. Each one of these women held a piece of me inside them. I can’t imagine any wife or mother reading this book and not feeling the same way. We all go through similar trials juggling marriage, children, and/or careers. It’s never easy and the stress seems to fall on us more than our counterparts. Though all four of these women had very different marriages, they were the same scared little girls inside, just trying to figure out what to do next and how to make it all better.
I think this book should be required reading for anyone planning on getting married. It takes a deep look at the problems and perks of marriage, without being condescending.
Wendy Walker simply shows you the lives of these for women and allows you to draw your own conclusions. Men and women think so differently that most times it’s really hard to figure out where the other is coming from. I think the worst trial we have as wives is getting our husband to understand what we’re saying.
The thing I absolutely loved about this book is that it was able to put things into perspective for me, without telling me how unreasonable I’m being. My husband is currently reading this book and I’m hoping he’ll figure out why I go ballistic when he throws his socks on the floor.
