The Blackabys have authored several books that have revolutionized the faith of many. The best thing about their style is that it is not too sophisticated, nor is it “dumbed down.” They use a straight-talk approach and vignettes from their personal experiences to conveying the message in Experiencing the Spirit: The Power of Pentecost Every Day.
Sugarcoated concepts are not included in this book. The authors state in the opening chapter, “Too often, we fall into a self-centered approach to our walk with God.” Readers are challenged chapter by chapter to rethink their walk of faith and encouraged to live by the Spirit. Christ’s life is an example of a submitted spirit, an obedient heart and an attentive ear to what the Father is saying through His Holy Spirit. If the Son of God needed the guidance of the Holy Spirit, how much more do we who live in the 21st century need His guidance?
Scriptural references woven throughout the text authorize points highlighted in every chapter. There is risk involved when we relinquish control of our lives to another, particularly the all-powerful God. Benefits outweigh apprehension on the part of the Christ follower, however that individual must intentionally surrender their will and their way. Only then is the Spirit free to meet the needs of those seeking and serving Him.
The study guide included in the back of the book facilitates small group discussion and builds up the community of faith. Thanks to Drs. Henry and Melvin Blackaby for offering another thought-provoking book, sure to stimulate lives in these difficult global and economic times.
I will not wait for a special occasion to give this book away, I’ll seize the day to encourage and challenge others.
Armchair Interviews says: Great gift book–for yourself and others.
