Computer specialist Rick Macey believes the leadership of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints is rotten, and that they are bilking millions of faithful believers out of their hard-earned money. He and his business partner have devised a way to get members to question the validity of the basic tenets of their beliefs–which could cause the church to lose millions of dollars in tithes and thousands of members. But Rick never imagined that there was a disturbing arm of the church designed to “disable” threats.

The Mormon leadership sends Kay Summers, a bright and ambitious assistant to one of their top leaders to Oregon to figure out who is behind this plot. But secretly monitoring Kay’s actions is the church’s “secret polic,e” the Danite Knights, who are dispatched to remove threats. Initially Kay and Rick are adversaries, but when people begin to die they team up and flee. Can Kay and Rick find a way to stop the Danite Knights once they have been dispatched or is it just a matter of time until they are also found and permanently removed.

This is a masterfully written and plotted suspense story. I have no idea how much of the information about the Mormon Church is real but the plot is very intriguing, fast paced, and thrilling. Author Murphy’s description of the sinister group and its activities is so masterfully described that it is hard to believe it is all fiction. I took a little while to warm up to the character of Rick. I felt his choice of actions, which were motivated for personal revenge and financial gain, were harming innocent people. Kay I liked from the beginning, she is bright, ambitious, and trapped in her current life by choice. Together they make an interesting couple.

This book is an incredibly imaginative and sinister tale of corruption at the top echelons of an organization. It could have taken place in many different settings, however, the author just chose the Mormon Church, which defiantly makes for fascinating reading! I can’t wait to see what his devious mind comes up with next!

Armchair Interviews says: Most interesting read coming from a computer techie.
