Recovering from a painful past and a recent gun shot wound, Lt. Ty Hauck, new head of the Greenwich, Connecticut Violent Crimes Unit, is looking forward to a weekend with his daughter. Stopping at a convenience store for boating supplies, they are caught in a hail of gun fire, shattering glass and blood. Oddly, there is only one death – a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice – but what the witnesses saw points to a gang-related drive-by shooting, and the shooters are later identified as a gang from the Dominican Republic.
Ty Hauck and his team must find out if this was a random shooting in an upscale neighborhood or a revenge shooting and if so, who was the target and why.
The clues in the on-going and dangerous investigation lead them in unrelated circles as more bodies show up, and the team finds itself going from the darker side of Connecticut to the glitzy casinos in search of answers. With the FBI now in the mix, Hauck is beginning to suspect the evidence is being manipulated and he and his team are being “played.” This investigation has been personal for Ty since he and his daughter were bystanders in the shooting spree, and now it has become more so with the appearance of Annie Fletcher, a newcomer to the area, who has become a possible romantic interest. Annie has reluctantly come forward with new information that turns the investigation in another direction, putting her in danger along with Ty and his team members who have also become targets.
Unable to gather enough evidence to make a case, Ty retraces all his information. What he finds questions the kind of person he is, and then a shattering event changes his life forever.
Appearing in a previous novel by Andrew Gross, Ty Hauck, whose character is strong, solid and believable, is now the lead character in this fast-paced plot that has lots of suspense, surprises and romance. Some of the author’s prior works has been co-authored with James Patterson.
Armchair Interviews says: Don’t Look Twice is a good start to a new crime series.
