Alexis (Alex) Peterson is a star on the soap opera “The Bare and the Brazen,” and is presenting at the daytime Emmys, along with her young co-star Jackson Masters. Jackson has not shown up. As she is on stage, reciting both their lines, something starts dripping on her face, and she looks up to see a body hanging above her. Then the body drops and the audience can see that is Jackson–murdered!

What a beginning! Fortunately LAPD detective Frank Jakes and his partner Len are there to manage the crime scene. Alex knows Jakes from before, when she was a suspect in a murder on her previous show. Alex’s young daughter Sarah and her mother are safely away in the Midwest at a family reunion, and her boyfriend is out of town consulting on a movie, and she wants to find out who has done this and help the attractive Detective Jakes. He has more bodies, and previous murders of other young aspiring actors. Alex helps him by checking with other soaps and uncovering the facts about their auditions.

Will Alex finally acknowledge the growing attraction she feels for Jakes? Will her crooked ex-husband Randy, back from his haven in Mexico, try to contact their daughter? The hairdresser on her show, Henri, tells her he has some information, and begs her to meet him at his apartment. When she goes she discovers him dead in his bathroom, and his place tossed. What was the murderer searching for? Will Jakes be able to protect Alex? Will her life become as convoluted as a soap opera plot?
