Emily Hudson travels to war-torn countries in an attempt to save priceless artifacts from the destruction surrounding them. Because her life never leaves her in one place too long, her partner on these U.N.-backed excursions, Joel Levy, is also her best friend.
On a job in the remote mountains of Afghanistan that had gone wrong from day one, the entire U.N. team comes under attack. Emily and Joel are taken hostage by a sadistic captor, intent on finding a missing treasure rumored to have been in the isolated museum. With Emily bearing witness, Joel is systematically tortured and eventually killed.
John Garrett—with a violent history of his own—is brought in by the CIA to save Emily, and in the process, invoke a form of justice.
From Kabul to a Greek island to Moscow to Paris and the eastern seaboard of the United States, the twisted conspiracy travels through history. Emily Hudson has strength and drive to match John Garrett’s point for point in every circumstance. They form a formidable, if flawed, pair.
Johansen presents a gripping story flowing from an intriguing premise of greed and madness. She captures the flavor of history and brings her locations to life. Deadlock is a difficult book to put down.
Armchair Interviews says: A highly recommended 5-star read.
