The author had told these stories to family and friends for years--and was encouraged to finally write them down for all to enjoy.

As a farm girl, I share many of Coates' experiences: country school, farm equipment, going to town, visiting family, etc.

The cow pie reference in the title means that then they used cow pies (manure) for bases in softball game. He said the size didn't matter, but how dried the cow pies were, sure did.

If you or someone you know was living on a farm right after World War II, you'll find the stories a steppingstone down to your own memory lane. This was a time of family togetherness, strong community interaction and caring--and hard-working men, women and children.

Armchair Interviews says: Coates captures a young man's life on the farm, his daily joys and trials--and the love of family.
