I have a new favorite children’s author and he is Jeremy Tankard. I giggled while reading Grumpy Bird and laughed out loud while reading Boo Hoo Bird. The expressions on Bird’s face are reminiscent of Mo Willems’ drawings (and I love Mo Willems books) but with more color and greater detail.

Bird got bonked while playing and nothing his animal friends did stopped his crying. They kissed, hugged, provided a cookie and a band-aid, and they tried to get him to play a game. But they were all unsuccessful. They failed! So the animals all cried hard. And what do you think Bird did then? You’ll have to read Boo Hoo Bird to find out.

Tankard’s books are delightful and mimic children’s behavior when hurt. There will be some smart little ones that make the connection between their behavior and Bird’s behavior. My three-year-old grandson didn’t (he’s pretty young yet), but his seven-year-old sister enjoyed the book and “got it.”

Armchair Interviews says: Boo Hoo Bird is a must read, must have for your child’s library.
